　Back down 让步

　　由于国际上各国的强烈反对，以色列最终于2003年7月21日宣布以色列不能合法驱逐其境内的制造自杀性爆炸事件者们的家属，前提是他们没有参与爆炸事件。外电中有这样一则新闻标题：Israelis Back Down on Deporting Kin. "Back down" 意指 "让步；放弃前言、意见等"。所以这就是说以色列在驱逐爆炸肇事者家属这一问题上做出了让步。

　　Bad debt 呆帐

　　自2003年12月起，随着济南、福州、成都、重庆4个城市的开放，外资银行在中国经营人民币业务的领域已拓展至内陆地区。目前，外资银行被允许在开放的13个城市内提供各种人民币服务。中国四大国有商业银行纷纷加快改革步伐，以应对外资银行的冲击。China Daily上有这样的报道：The "big four" Chinese commercial banks are seeking to lower their bad debt ratio among other reform measures to sharpen their competitive edge against foreign counterparts exploring the domestic market. Bad debt就是我们熟悉的“呆帐”，“呆帐”是指那些根本找不到债主、收不回来的债。

　　Black sheep 害群之马

　　9·11事件发生后，本·拉登家族其它亲戚拥有的商业集团均深受其牵连，纷纷表示要与本·拉登划清界限。外电有这样的报道: "Bin Laden Group, the business empire owned by relatives of the world's most wanted man, is seeking advice from British public relations firms on how to distance itself from the black sheep of the family." 其中，black sheep可不是"黑色绵羊"的意思，而是"败家子、害群之马"的意思， "distance oneself from…"是"与某人划清界限、疏远"的意思。

　　Blow up 爆炸

　　2003年，我们频繁听到自杀性爆炸事件。外电有这样一句话：A Palestinian bomber blew himself up Monday at a busy crossroads in northern Israel. Blow up的意思就是"爆炸；炸得粉碎"，所以这就是说自杀者自己在爆炸中被炸得支离破碎。

　　Box office 票房收入

　　大片《骇客帝国》三部曲的终结曲《The Matrix Revolutions》的票房收入和前两部相比略逊一筹。外电有报道：The sci-fi Matrix saga lost some of its spin at the U.S. box office, with "The Matrix Revolutions" pulling in $50.16 million in its opening weekend — off 45 percent from the previous chapter's weekend debut. box office的原意是“(戏院、电影院、音乐厅等的)售票处，票房”，可以引申为“票房收入”，再来看一个例子：The play got bad reviews, but in box office terms it was a great success.(这出戏虽未受到好评，但从票房收入来看却非常成功。)

　　Bubble economy 泡沫经济

　　Bubble的本意是"水泡，气泡"，如泡泡糖就是"bubble gum"。后来引申为"泡影，妄想"的意思，比如现在的网络经济就被一些人称为bubble economy (泡沫经济)，例如这样一个新闻标题"U.S. Hi-Tech Magazine Closes in Dot-com Bubble "(美国高科技杂志在网络泡沫中关门倒闭)。

　　By press time 截至发稿时间

　　2003年5月，山西省临汾市安泽县永泰煤矿井瓦斯爆炸事故已造成10人死亡，Chinadaily有报道说：By press time, dozens of professional rescuers were working underground to try and find the nine missing miners，就是说截至发稿时间，有数十名专业营救人员还在井下进行救援工作。By press time是英语新闻中常用的一个词，意思就是"截至发稿时间"。
